The Regional and Urban Studies Institute of the University of Coimbra (IERU) is an interdisciplinary organism of investigation and scientific formation in the areas of regional and urban development. It was founded in 1986 on direct dependency of the Rectory and in July 24 1982 it became a non-profit association.

The main aims of the IERU are promoting scientific investigation in the areas of regional and urban development, providing services to public or private institutions and the pluridisciplinary teaching of post-graduate studies. In recent years, the IERU has developed projects financed by the INTERREG and ESPON communitarian projects as well as elaborated studies for diverse organisms, mainly for City Halls.

According to the Statures those who can become members of the IERU are the professors of the University of Coimbra and of other higher education institutions as well as the renowned experts in the scientific areas of Regional Science, master and doctorate students who are oriented by the IERU members or who are in any way linked to the Institute.
